The “seven last words” of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels are:

1. “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

2. To a thief who had been crucified with him and who asked for mercy, He said, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

3. To His Mother He said, “Woman, behold, your son!” And to St. John, Jesus exclaimed, “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:26, 27).

4. To His Father, in the prayerful words drawn from a prophetic Psalm, He said, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46; Psalm 22:1).

5. “I thirst” (John 19:28).

6. “It is finished” (John 19:30).

7. “Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!” (Luke 23:46; cf. Psalm 31:5).
